David Asp named Rams club coach for 17/18 Season

The Newport Baseball Club is excited to announce that David Asp has been appointed to the position of Club Coach for the 2017/18 Baseball Victoria Summer League Season.

In addition to being a constant on the mound for the Rams at senior level, David played all of his junior baseball at Newport and has had experience with other clubs at Essendon, Geelong and most recently Williamstown. He has also played Winter Ball for Lara, Melbourne Uni and Watsonia.

He is one of the finest Rams players of his generation. A generation that included Mark Jowett, Dean Marnell, David Land, Chris Petit Bramwell and Lucas & Adam Simpson. Although he never had an overpowering fastball, his ability to consistently hit spots when pitching saw him dominate many hitters over a long and distinguished career.

He has won multiple Mackrell Trophies as well as Jack & Beryl Bunting (MVP) awards during his career as well as a Rams Winter MVP. He also won Winter MVP’s at Lara and Watsonia (and a batting title at Lara – I think he’s most proud of that one!). He is also one of only three Rams players to have won the George Heron Trophy for the Baseball Victoria MVP.

Above all else he is a fierce competitor. He demands that his team mates compete and he hates to be beaten. Although the fastball might have lost a couple of MPH over the years he continues to get the better of Division 1 hitters through his sheer will to win, his ability to spot any pitch and his consistency.

Please join us in congratulating David on his appointment.

Announcements regarding other members of the coaching team will be made in due course.

The club would also like to take this opportunity to thank Matt Lawman for his service over the past two seasons. Matt is an exceptional talent who, along with his outstanding assistants Dean Malthouse and Dean Anglin did an amazing job teaching our young Rams squad how to prepare for and play baseball.

Matt has decided to take a break away from baseball at this point due to conflicting work and personal responsibilities.
